The public transport system around Prague is very good and cheap to use. It is a very good way to get around the city to see more of it. Near the centre of Prague the trams and Metro run very frequently and are the best way of getting around, especially during the day when the traffic, like any other capital city is very bad. If you want to get further out of the city you will need to use the bus service or the train station is near the centre if you want to see other cities around the Czech Republic. |
To use public transport you need to buy a ticket, tickets a valid for a time period once they have been franked. You can get them valid for anything from 20 minutes (1 trip really) or an hour or 1, 3 or 7 days. Tickets are available at the Metro stations, some major trams stops or “Tabak” shops. These tickets need to be validated by being franked when you get on the chosen method of transport and are valid from the time they are franked. The same ticket is valid for the trams, Metro and most city buses but for longer bus journeys you will take a bus ticket. Tickets are cheap enough so if you are going to use the trams and Metro get one, there are regular checks on the trams for them and if you do not have a ticket you will be fined heavily. |

Maps with tram, metro and bus routes on are usually available at the reception of most hotels and apartments so pick one up. The trams and metro run regularly throughout the day, normally in 10 or 15 minute intervals on main route and change to a less regular and few services around midnight. Also the night service trams change numbers so be aware of this if you intend to use the trams late at night. |
